New Study of Women In Broadcast News

Women are holding more responsible jobs in broadcast journalism, but the number of female news-staff members at radio and television stations is no longer growing, according to a new survey released today. The survey, conducted last year for the Radio-Television News Directors Association, found that 11 percent of the news directors at the nation's commercial television stations were women in 1983, up from 8 percent in 1982 and less than 1 percent in 1972.

Economic Scene; Torrid Growth: Good or Bad?

IS the sizzling growth of the economy in the first half of 1984 good news or bad news? Obviously, for the White House, it is the best news imaginable in this election year. Real economic growth ran at an annual rate of 10.1 percent in the first quarter and 7.5 percent in the second quarter, almost two points higher than the first ''flash'' estimate. In terms of final sales - the demand for goods and services excluding changes in inventories - the upsurge in the second quarter was 10.4 percent, against 3.6 percent in the first quarter, when inventory building accounted for most of the boom. Yet the rate of inflation has slowed to 3.2 percent in the second quarter, as measured by one price index used to adjust the gross national product for inflation. Consumer prices rose only two-tenths of 1 percent in June, the Government reported yesterday.

George Karl , who starred at North Carolina and then played six seasons for the San Antonio Spurs, has been tapped to replace Tom Nissalke as coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 33-year-old Karl, who will become the youngest coach in the National Basketball Association, has been with the Cleveland organization as director of player acquisition since last year. Although the Cavaliers declined to confirm his latest appointment, they scheduled a news conference for today to announce a successor to Nissalke, who was dismissed in May.

PEKING-HANOI VERBAL DUEL HEATS UP

China accused Vietnam today of fomenting trouble along their common frontier to sabotage any normalization of Chinese- Soviet relations. An official commentary by the New China News Agency repeated Peking's charge that Hanoi was creating border tensions to distract world attention from Vietnam's activities in Cambodia, where Vietnamese troops have been fighting Cambodian guerrillas that are supported by Peking. The official press agency went on to assert that ''the Vietnamese authorities want to put a spoke in the wheels of Sino-Soviet relations.''
