A senior official said he hoped the actions represented an end to the drift in her policies. The action appeared to defuse threats of a coup.

Bid for Ponderosa

Ponderosa Inc., which thwarted a takeover attempt earlier this year, said it was evaluating the New York investor Asher B. Edelman's disclosure that he had amassed an 18.5 percent stake in the restaurant chain and was considering acquiring the rest. Mr. Edelman has not specified a takeover price, but in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing made public today, he disclosed that he and seven investment groups in which he has an interest own 1.8 million of Ponderosa's 9.75 million shares outstanding. Ponderosa closed today at $24.875, down $1.625 a share.

Amax Deal Is Final

Amax Inc. said it had completed the acquisition of the 50 percent of Alumax Inc. that it did not already own from Mitsui & Company and the Nippon Steel Corporation of Japan. Amax said it had issued 4 million shares of 8.5 percent Alumax preferred stock, with a par value of $100 million, to Mitsui. Amax said it had also acquired remaining stock from Mitsui and Nippon Steel for $335 million in cash.

Unisys Will Sell Supplies Division

The Unisys Corporation said it would sell its international business forms and supplies division to an investor group led by the buyout firm of Clayton & Dubilier Inc. for $50 million in cash, plus notes of an unspecified value. The investor group, which includes managers of the division, has formed a new company, Nu-Kote International, for the acquisition.

G.M.-E.D.S. STRAINS INDICATED

A report that the General Motors Corporation unsuccessfully discussed selling all or part of its Electronic Data Systems unit to the American Telephone and Telegraph Company appears to indicate how difficult the process of combining E.D.S. and G.M. has been. The report, in today's issue of The Wall Street Journal, also shows how serious the strains between Roger B. Smith, the G.M. chairman, and H. Ross Perot, the E.D.S. chairman, have become. When G.M. announced that it was buying E.D.S. two and a half years ago, it said the intention was ''to join together in order to create the largest and most technologically advanced computer services company in the world.'' However, A.T.&T. executives confirmed today that they had conducted talks including ''a wide range of options'' with E.D.S. ''that did not preclude investment.'' But spokesmen for E.D.S. and G.M. declined to discuss the situation, with G.M. saying only: ''E.D.S. is not for sale. There are no discussions going on concerning such an action.''

Sears to Sell Back Hagemeyer Stake

Sears, Roebuck & Company said it had agreed in principle to sell back to Hagemeyer N.V. the 20 percent of the general trading company that it had bought 13 months ago. Sears said it would receive $31.1 million for the 770,000 shares.

Goodyear Cuts 680 Staff Jobs

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, which last week deflected a takeover bid from Sir James Goldsmith, said today that it planned to cut 680 people from its corporate staff. Goodyear said the move was part of its previously announced plan to restructure its operations.
