Judge Closes Jet Bombing Trial to Protect Airline Security

A Federal judge took the unusual step yesterday of closing a civil trial to news organizations and the public, ruling that testimony in the case could endanger lives by disclosing secret information about airline security. The case is unusual because the United States Supreme Court has ruled that the Constitution provides for public trials. The Court allows exceptions but requires compelling reasons, like the need to protect important trade secrets or privacy in juvenile proceedings, to close a courtroom.

Westland Contract

The Westland Group P.L.C. of Britain said its Westland Aerospace Ltd. unit had received a contract from the Allison Gas Turbine division of the General Motors Corporation, with a potential value of $200 million. Westland said it would design and manufacture engine enclosures for the new Saab 2000, a 50-seat prop jet.

Baltimore Bancorp

The Baltimore Bancorp said its leading institutional investors had succeeded in electing six directors to the board. It said in announcing the results of a recent shareholders' vote that a dissident shareholder group was unable to seize control of the 18-member board. The dissidents, led by Edwin Hale, a Baltimore executive, wanted to increase the board's size to 28. David Eisner, the senior vice president at Providence Capital Inc., a New York firm that advised several large investors, said investors were unhappy with the performance of Baltimore Bancorp in recent years and its rejection last year of a merger offer by another Maryland bank.

News Cameras in Courts? New York's Law Disputed

The experimental law that allowed cameras into New York State's courtrooms -- and dramatic footage of criminal trials into millions of living rooms -- expires this week, with the law's future in dispute. The dispute centers on a provision in a State Senate bill that would extend the law but would not allow news organizations to videotape or photograph some witnesses during testimony unless the witnesses agreed. Many news organizations say that would sharply curtail their ability to cover a trial. The Assembly version of the bill, reflecting current law, would not set such a limit.

Otis Elevator Deal

The Otis Elevator Company, a subsidiary of the United Technologies Corporation, said it had signed an agreement to acquire a majority interest in the Hankook Engineering Company, an elevator company based in Seoul, South Korea. Hankook, which makes freight elevators, has been Otis's sales agent in South Korea for the last year. The new company will be named the Hankook Otis Elevator Company. It will sell, manufacture, install and maintain elevator and escalator equipment using Otis designs and technology.

Ameritech To Acquire Cybertel

The Ameritech Corporation, the regional Bell operating company based here, said today that it would pay $512 million to acquire Cybertel, one of the two companies providing cellular telephone service in St. Louis. The transaction should provide higher growth opportunities for Ameritech. Its principal business, providing local phone service in five Midwestern states, is viewed by the investment community as a slow-growth utility.

Goldstar Pays Zenith Balance

The Zenith Electronics Corporation said today that it had received $13.5 million from the Goldstar Company, the South Korean consumer electronics giant, in connection with the sale of 5 percent of Zenith's common shares. In February, Zenith, based in Glenview, Ill., said it would sell 1.4 million shares to Goldstar at $10.34 each. Goldstar made an initial payment of $1.4 million of the total $15 million. The most recent payment represents the balance.

Kodak Introduces Electronic Camera

The Eastman Kodak Company took its first real step into digital photography by introducing an electronic camera system that can turn a conventional Nikon into a high-tech electronic camera. Kodak's professional digital camera system will sell for about $20,000 and is intended primarily for photojournalists and government surveillance, the company said. The system also marks Kodak's first move into pure electronic photography, where images are captured and created without film. The system uses a regular Nikon F3 camera body and lenses that are attached to an electronic back. When the photographer shoots a picture, the images are stored on an electronic chip instead of on film. The camera can take 2.5 images a second and can store up to 600 images. Images can be transmitted directly by telephone lines to a computer, without developing or finishing. The camera is being tested by several newspapers, including USA Today.
