But the issue is still being pursued, in a way destructive of our political system. This week a Senate special counsel questioned Nina Totenberg of National Public Radio, who first broadcast a report of Professor Hill's charge. Two weeks ago the counsel, Peter E. Fleming, questioned the print reporter who broke the story, Timothy Phelps of Newsday.

Leading up to this year's campaign, we heard plenty of promises from the media about greater attention to the substance of candidates' ideas. Soon enough, though, personal issues took over. Already, Bill Clinton and his wife have had to justify their marriage, and he has been forced to defend a thoughtful letter written as a college student coming to terms with the draft and the Vietnam War. Paul Tsongas has stripped to a swimsuit to prove his health. And Bob Kerrey has had to explain repeatedly why his family business cannot afford to buy private health insurance for its workers.

Loss at Mr. Coffee

Mr. Coffee Inc. said today that it had a net loss of $1.72 million in the fourthquarter of last year in contrast to net income of $2.92 million, or 35 cents a share, in the comparable 1990 quarter. The company said that its operating loss for the quarter was $1.25 million and that it took a charge of $472,000 for the early repayment of debt, resulting in the net loss of $1.72 million. Sales at the company, which makes coffee makers, replacement decanters and filters, fell to $51.4 million from $52.3 million. Profits were hurt by a shift in sales toward lower-margin coffee makers, lower volume and prices on tea makers, and higher advertising expenses, the company said.

The TJX Companies, which operates four retail store chains, said today that it would close 75 of its 576 Hit or Miss stores and posted a fourth-quarter loss after setting aside $50 million to cover potential future costs. The retailer also said it would privately place an issue of convertible preferred stock with several institutional investors. Proceeds will be used to reduce $50 million worth of 8.125 percent notes that mature in May 1993.
