Shelling and sniper fire killed at least 5 people in the besieged Bosnian capital today and wounded at least 30 more, including a camera woman for Cable News Network. Margaret Moth, the wounded CNN camerawoman, was struck in the jaw by a sniper's bullet and severely wounded as she rode in a minivan to the Sarajevo Airport for a report on the United Nations airlift.

The Egyptian press, which is often used as a vehicle to criticize Israel, gave a muted response today to President Hosni Mubarak's announcement that he would be willing to travel to Israel. The proposed visit, which would be the first by an Arab leader since President Anwar el-Sadat's trailblazing trip in 1977, was announced at a news appearance with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel here on Tuesday.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, Ray March, editor of The Carmel Pine Cone in California, inadvertently left out the crossword puzzle. Looking back, Ray wistfully remembers that some of the resulting phone calls were not really unpleasant, just indignant. Like all good editors he blames the lapse on "some inexplicable transition of type and page formatting." Even so, he moved fast to repair the damage.

Cascade International Inc.'s 29 stores have been auctioned for $370,000 to bidders who largely intend to liquidate the assets rather than start new stores. A final auction here yesterday of furniture, equipment and supplies from headquarters was expected to fetch $20,000 to $30,000, the auction administrator said. The money will help pay Cascade's creditors, who are owed $16 million. The federally appointed trustee for the failed Boca Raton, Fla., retailer is also considering whether to file claims against several people and companies suspected of fraud.

Shearson Lehman Brothers Holdings, a unit of American Express, said it would take an $84 million after-tax charge in the second quarter to reflect the reduction in carrying value of its $500 million loan to Prime Computer Inc. Prime Computer, a troubled Bedford, Mass., developer of engineering software, changed its name to the Computervision Corporation last month. On June 5, Shearson Lehman announced it would try to take the company public again.

Pepsico Inc. is looking to the mountains in its search for alternatives to traditional soft drinks. Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers has agreed to distribute the Grayson Mountain Water Company's Grayson Sparkling, a clear, sparkling, flavored water that comes from a source in the Blue Ridge Mountains and is bottled in Virginia, Grayson said. Terms were not disclosed. Pepsi began distributing another product, Grayson 100 Percent Pure Mountain Water, for the Boca Raton, Fla., company in 1991. More than a million bottles of Grayson Sparkling were sold during its first two days on the market last week; Grayson estimates sales will reach $30 million in its first year.

The Banc One Corporation said it would acquire the First Community Bancorp of Rockford, Ill., in a stock swap valued at $125 million, based on current prices. If Banc One's stock price is between $47 and $51, the bank holding companies will set an exchange rate resulting in a market equivalent value of $31.96 for Banc One's stock.

The Coors Brewing Company ended talks to sell its transportation unit to J. B. Hunt Transport Inc. and is searching for a new potential buyer. The companies announced on June 9 that they were conducting negotiations for Hunt, based in Lowell, Ark., to buy the Coors Transportation Company. Coors said the talks had ended because the companies "couldn't reach a mutually satisfactory agreement" on the sale. Coors, based in Golden, Colo., declined to specify the stumbling blocks. Hunt officials were not available for comment.
