The Daily News has a new editor in chief, an English journalist who trained on Fleet Street. Mortimer B. Zuckerman, the chairman and co-publisher of The Daily News, announced yesterday that he had named Martin Dunn, 38, editor in chief. Mr. Dunn has been the editor of The Boston Herald, a tabloid, for the last four months.

When 10 unions of The New York Post made their deals with Rupert Murdoch on Monday, it was no surprise in the newspaper industry that there was one newspaper union that was left out. The New York Newspaper Guild, which represents reporters and some editors as well as advertising, clerical and circulation employees, has grown accustomed to that position. It seems always to be the left-out union.

A day after angry mobs killed four Western journalists in retaliation for a United Nations military strike against a Somali clan leader, senior United Nations officials in Mogadishu said the United Nations would press ahead with its goal of disarming the capital and increasing its forces as it searched for a the fugitive clan leader. United Nations military officials said the United Nations had no intention of backing off militarily despite increasing criticism and pressure from relief agencies as well as member nations, particularly Italy, which has several thousand troops in Somalia and whose Government today called for the suspension of United Nations combat operations in Somalia and a review of the peacekeeping mission. Over the last weeks, Italy has stressed the need to negotiate a solution to the conflict with Gen. Mohammed Farah Aidid and his faction, a move that has angered United Nations officials.

Delta Air Lines Inc. today announced an international air fare sale, cutting up to 30 percent off fall and winter advance-purchase round-trip fares to Europe. The airline, based in Atlanta, also extended its European peak-season fare until August 31. The promotion was to expire on Thursday.

Shares of Cincinnati Microwave Inc. doubled in value yesterday on news it had developed a tiny, inexpensive high-speed wireless modem for use with new packet data networks being built by McCaw Cellular Communications and others. The stock rose $2.625, to $5, in Nasdaq trading. Until yesterday, the stock had attracted little attention on Wall Street. No investment analysts have followed the company, Jacques Robinson, the president of the company, said. The company announced on Tuesday that it had teamed with McCaw to market packet data products and services to corporate data users. The modem, which will sell for less than $300, will allow mobile users to send and receive information on the Cellular Digital Packet Data networks, which are faster than current technology.

Bowater Inc., the largest manufacturer of newsprint in the country, said yesterday that it would cut annual newsprint production by 16 percent because demand remained weak and the business was not profitable. The production cut would lower the total amount of newsprint manufactured in North America by about 1.5 percent, according to a Salomon Brothers analyst, Chip Dillon. The move would also cut excess inventories by about 60 percent, he said. The company, based in Darien, Conn., said it would trim production by 264,500 short tons, to about 1.44 million tons.

AST Research Inc. said yesterday that it had completed its purchase of the Tandy Corporation's Grid and personal computer manufacturing divisions for about $160 million. As a result, AST said it planned to take a fourth-quarter pretax charge of $125 million and post a loss for the quarter and the year. Company officials declined to define the size of the loss. AST had been expected to post earnings of 40 cents a share for the fourth quarter ended July 3, and $1.45 a share for the year, according to the Institutional Brokers Estimate System. AST shares were down 87.5 cents, to $15.125, in Nasdaq trading yesterday.

Shares of Paging Network Inc., based in Plano, Tex., rose 8.8 percent yesterday after Prudential Securities Research promoted the stock to its regional brokers on Tuesday. In addition, an analyst at Volpe, Welty & Company, Eric Zimits, upgraded his recommendation on the shares of Paging Network to "buy" from "hold." Shares of Paging Network rose $2.75, to a record high of $34, in Nasdaq trading.

Saying its stock price does not reflect the value of the business, Reebok International Ltd. disclosed yesterday that it would buy back up to $200 million of its shares. The shoe and apparel company, based in Stoughton, Mass., said the repurchase would be in addition to the $200 million buyback program begun a year ago. Under that program, it has already bought 5.6 million shares for about $183 million, the company said. Reebok has 86.4 million shares outstanding. Reebok stock closed at $27.625 a share, down 12.5 cents, on the New York Stock Exchange.

The stock of Celestial Seasonings Inc. jumped 46.25 percent yesterday in its first day of Nasdaq trading. The shares of the herbal-tea maker, which is based in Boulder, Colo., closed at $29.25 on volume of more than three million shares. On Monday, the company raised $35 million through its initial public offering of 1.9 million shares -- slightly less than half the company -- priced at $20 each. Celestial's chief executive, Mo Siegel, and Vestar Capital Partners, which bought the company from Kraft in 1988, will still own about 31 percent of the company. Employees own the remaining shares.
