Videotron and I.B.M. to Explore Interactive Technology

Videotron Ltee. said today that it and I.B.M. intended to develop technology jointly for two-way interactive television services that are planned to start next year in Quebec. The first phase of the project, estimated at $750 million (Canadian), or $553 million (United States), calls for installing 34,000 television set-top boxes that will provide access to banking, energy management, electronic mail, classified advertisements, lottery results and Government services.

Viacom Now Owns Paramount

Viacom Inc. took control yesterday of Paramount Communications Inc. by acquiring more than half its stock for $6.6 billion in cash. Viacom, which owns MTV, Showtime and other cable channels, said it had acquired 61.657 million Paramount shares, which amounts to 50.1 percent of Paramount's stock outstanding. Paramount holders will also receive a package of Viacom securities, bringing the total price for Paramount to about $10 billion. Forced to Fight The companies announced on Sept. 12 that they had agreed to a merger, but Viacom was soon forced into a costly and bitter fight against a rival bidder, QVC Network Inc.

MARINE AND INDUSTRIAL BUSINESS TO BE DISCONTINUED

The Chrysler Corporation will discontinue its marine engine and industrial operation when it closes a leased plant in Beaver Dam, Wis., in the third quarter. About 29 workers represented by the United Paperworkers union will lose their jobs when the plant is closed. Those workers do not have transfer rights to other plants. Chrysler, the nation's third-largest auto maker, said the decision had been made as part of its strategy to focus on the automotive business. The Beaver Dam plant, operated by Chrysler since 1970, converts Chrysler vehicle engines for use in small boats as well as agricultural equipment, lift trucks, motor homes and shuttle buses.

Chief Counsel of Advanced Micro Resigns

Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s top in-house lawyer, Thomas W. Armstrong, resigned today, one day after Advanced Micro won a crucial copyright-infringement suit involving the Intel Corporation. The 53-year-old general counsel resigned to "seek other professional opportunities." He was not available for comment because he was at a legal seminar in Texas, Advanced Micro officials said.

ALLIED PRODUCTS TO SELL COOPER DIVISION

The Allied Products Corporation said yesterday that it had signed a letter of intent to sell all the assets and business of its Cooper division to Parman Capital Investments Inc. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Completion of the sale is scheduled for early April. Cooper, based in Brady, Tex., manufactures work-over rigs used in the oil industry. Allied Products, based in Chicago, makes agricultural equipment and industrial products. Parman is an international investment group based in the British Virgin Islands.

To the Editor: As the mother of Dan Eldon, a 22-year-old Reuters photographer who was stoned to death in Mogadishu, Somalia, last July 12, I was deeply moved by "Slaughtering the Messengers" (editorial, Feb. 25). Dan and three colleagues, Hansi Krauss (Associated Press) and Anthony Macharia and Hos Maina (Reuters), were covering the aftermath of a United Nations bombing of a meeting place of Gen. Mohammed Farah Aidid's followers. More than 50 people died, and scores were injured in a scene Mohammed Shaffi, a Reuters television cameraman, called the worst carnage he had ever seen.

The 63 insolvent savings and loan associations operating in the Resolution Trust Corporation's conservatorship program lost $623 million in the fourth quarter of 1993, the corporation said today. Those 63 institutions lost $691 million in the third quarter of 1993 and $871 million in the fourth quarter of 1992. At the end of last year, the conservatorships held $23.2 billion in assets and had $27.3 billion of liabilities, giving them a negative net worth of $4.1 billion.
