Anthony Mason and John Starks have sometimes gotten in trouble for things they have said. Today, they got in trouble for what they didn't say. Both Mason and Starks skipped today's interview session with the national news media and were fined $10,000 apiece by the National Basketball Association. The Knicks were fined $20,000 by the league for allowing the two players to miss the session. Both players arrived with the team at the Summit today, but while the rest of the team was being interviewed on the court, Starks and Mason simply waited in the closed Knicks' locker room for the interview session to end. When it did, reporters were cleared out of the arena, and Starks and Mason joined the Knicks for practice.

SNAPPLE TO GAIN DISTRIBUTORS IN TEXAS AND CALIFORNIA

The Snapple Beverage Corporation said yesterday that it would pay $38.5 million for two distributors and take a 50 percent stake in a third to gain more control over distribution in California and Texas. Snapple, based in Valley Stream, L.I., said it had agreements to purchase the Trinity Beverage Company of Houston and the Groux Beverage Corporation, of Orange County, Calif. An additional agreement was reached to invest in the Haralambos Beverage Company, its exclusive distributor in parts of metropolitan Los Angeles.

ELJER'S SHARES SURGE ON FORECAST OF HIGHER EARNINGS

The stock of Eljer Industries jumped 14 percent yesterday after the company said that it expected substantially higher earnings for the second quarter that ends on July 3. Eljer stock closed up 87.5 cents, at $7.125, on the New York Stock Exchange. The company said net income would be between $2.1 million and $2.5 million, or 30 cents and 35 cents a share, compared with a loss of $1.44 million, for the quarter a year earlier. Eljer, based in Plano, Tex., is a maker and distributor of building materials, including plumbing, heating and venting products.

ALLIANT TECHSYSTEMS TAKES STEPS TO AVOID TAKEOVER

Trying to stave off an attempt by a large investor to take control of its board, Alliant Techsystems Inc. said yesterday that it would try to make a "significant acquisition." The company, a munitions manufacturer based in Hopkins, Minn., said in a letter to stockholders that it would also consider a stock repurchase program and a cash dividend. Alliant said it believed an acquisition would be the smartest way to increase stockholder value. The company is challenging a proxy fight initiated earlier this month by Capstay Partners L.P., an investment group, and an affiliate, Gotham Capital III L.P. They are seeking to replace board members and then sell or spin off part of the company. Alliant Techsystems' shares were up 75 cents, at $29.25, on the New York Stock Exchange.

UAL SHAREHOLDERS SEEK TO BLOCK VOTE ON BUYOUT

Shareholders of the UAL Corporation filed a motion yesterday to block a July 12 vote by shareholders on an employee buyout of the parent of United Airlines. The motion for a preliminary injunction, filed in Delaware Chancery Court, says UAL failed to adequately tell shareholders of opposition to the plan from some directors and union members. The motion also contends that it is unfair to ask shareholders to vote before UAL completes two bond offerings and a preferred stock offering on which the plan hinges. In a letter to the court, a UAL lawyer called the motion "baseless" and wrote that a delay of the vote would cause UAL and its stockholders "potentially irreparable harm."

KMART BOARD TAKES NO ACTION ON FOUR SPECIALTY UNITS

The board of the Kmart Corporation took no action yesterday at a meeting on the fate of the company's four specialty retail divisions. The board was to consider several options for the units, including selling them off entirely or partly. At the annual meeting on June 3, shareholders rejected a plan to sell stock linked to the performance of each division. After yesterday's meeting at its headquarters in Troy, Mich., the company issued a statement saying the board and management "are reviewing the total strategy of Kmart." Shares of Kmart rose 50 cents yesterday, to $16.125, on the New York Stock Exchange.

DIGITAL CHANGES NAME OF A UNIT AS SOME SEE A SALE AHEAD

The Digital Equipment Corporation said yesterday that it was changing the name of its disk drive business to Avastor, a move some analysts viewed as preparing the unit for sale. The business is one of four that make up Digital Equipment's storage business group, which has been one of its stronger performers. Digital Equipment said in May that it planned to sell assets in an effort to return to profitability by the end of the year. The spokeswoman said a name change in advance of a sale "is the favorite rumor," but she declined to confirm that the business was for sale.

The Earth Technology Corporation has agreed to acquire Hazwaste Industries for 2.3 million shares of Earth Technology stock valued at about $29 million. Hazwaste, a closely held company based in Richmond, specializes in environmental remediation services. It had 1993 revenue of $50 million. Earth Technology provides environmental consulting services for government and industry.

Dollar Posts Gains in Tokyo

The dollar rebounded against the yen in trading here this morning after the Bank of Japan intervened to support the American currency. The dollar's rebound helped Japanese stocks recover some but not all of their steep losses today. Traders said the Bank of Japan put in bids this morning at 100.40 yen to the dollar. In late afternoon trading, the dollar had climbed to 101.12 yen, up from 100.30 yen in New York late Tuesday.

Chief of G.M. Unit to Retire

The General Motors Corporation said today that Robert T. O'Connell, chairman and chief executive of the General Motors Acceptance Corporation, would take early retirement, effective July 1. Mr. O'Connell's positions at the auto maker's finance arm will be eliminated, company officials said. His responsibilities will be assumed by the president of the finance unit, John R. Rines.
