The Daily News hired the former editor of its former competitor, New York Newsday, yesterday. The editor, Donald Forst, is to be metropolitan editor of The News. Mr. Forst has been editor of Newsday's Queens edition since the paper's parent, Times Mirror, closed New York Newsday last July.

Two weeks after China announced a broad plan to restrict the flow of news and economic information into China, the Clinton Administration said today that it would raise the subject in trade talks next week, the first indication that China's efforts to control Western news operations may soon become a new source of friction between the two countries. "This is, of course, an issue of free speech and censorship, but it is also at the heart of our trade relationship," said Mickey Kantor, the United States trade representative. "We don't know how China plans to implement its restrictions, but clearly it is a step in the wrong direction."

In a windowless, heavily guarded Federal courtroom here, lawyers finished presenting evidence today on a defense motion to change the location of the trial of two men accused of bombing the Federal Building, which until last April 19 stood in one piece across the street. Prosecutors and lawyers for the defendants, Timothy J. McVeigh and Terry L. Nichols, will make their final arguments on Friday morning before Judge Richard P. Matsch of Federal District Court, who has said he will then look at the thousands of pages of press coverage and dozens of videotapes introduced by witnesses for both sides before deciding.

I find it odd that, in articles about Whitewater, Hillary Rodham Clinton is depicted as a secretive, dissembling dragon lady who loathes the media. That's not the person I covered and knew for a decade. As a longtime journalist who is certainly no Friend of Bill, I recall how, thanks to Mrs. Clinton's intervention, I did not have to sue under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act to obtain access to public records.

The United Healthcare Corporation will acquire Healthwise of America Inc. in a stock deal worth about $290 million, the two health maintenance organizations said yesterday. United is offering 0.6475 of a share for each Healthwise share, or a total of 4.6 million United shares. Healthwise's stock rose $2.375, to $39.875 yesterday, in Nasdaq trading. United edged up 37.5 cents, to $63.125, on the New York Stock Exchange. Shareholders representing about 20 percent of Healthwise's outstanding shares have agreed to vote in favor of the deal. United, which is based in Minneapolis, said the purchase would give it access to managed-care infrastructures in markets that remain largely unpenetrated by H.M.O.'s, including Tennessee, Arkansas, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Washington, D.C.

Metromedia International Group Inc. said yesterday that it had agreed to buy the Samuel Goldwyn Company, a struggling independent Hollywood studio, for $115 million. The news from Metromedia, which first made a bid for Goldwyn in December, followed an announcement earlier in the day by the Dutch company Polygram N.V. that it had withdrawn its offer to buy Goldwyn's film and television library. Metromedia, controlled by the investor John W. Kluge, owns the Orion Pictures Corporation and the Alliance Entertainment Corporation. The companies said Goldwyn shareholders would receive $5 worth of Metromedia stock for each Goldwyn share. Goldwyn shares rose 62.5 cents yesterday, to $4.75, on the American Stock Exchange.

The Torchmark Corporation announced a $130 million charge yesterday on its unsuccessful natural-gas unit and said it might divide into separate publicly traded companies. The company, a life and health insurer based in Birmingham, Ala., hired the investment banking firm of Morgan Stanley to advise it about the split. Lee Bartlett, a Torchmark spokesman, would not say into how many parts the company might split. Torchmark said it took a charge of $130 million, or $1.82 a share, for the fourth quarter to dispose of its Black Warrior energy investment, which was supposed to find ways to pull natural gas from coal seams. The charge led to a quarterly loss of $56 million, or 79 cents a share, compared with net income of $64 million, or 89 cents, in the comparable period a year earlier.

The Monsanto Company and the DeKalb Genetics Corporation said yesterday that they had joined forces in agricultural biotechnology. As part of the deal, Monsanto will invest nearly $160 million to take a significant minority stake in DeKalb, the second-largest company in the North American seed corn market. Monsanto will also pay DeKalb $19.5 million for a 10-year collaboration, which will concentrate on corn and soybeans. The agreement also covers other crops, including sorghum, wheat, oilseeds and produce. DeKalb's shares gained $4, to $63.25, in Nasdaq trading. Shares of Monsanto advanced $1.125, to $131.375, on the New York Stock Exchange.
